Melanotan II is a peptide analog of a-MSH (a-melanocyte-stimulating hormone) that has been designed to stimulate more melanin production in the skin. The higher production of melanin in the skin then creates a sunless tan in most users.

Melanotan II (or MT-II) acts as a non-selective melanocortin receptor agonist, which then stimulates the melanocytes to produce melanin. This is how we see that tanned effect on the skin, with nearly the same shades and results as regular UV tanning, but without all the bad exposure.
